Clothing & Styling Tips

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE ARE ALL SUGGESTIONS, WE WANT YOU TO WEAR WHAT YOU WANT, BUT ALSO WHAT WILL LOOK AMAZING THE PHOTOS!

Basic Steps & Tips

We love a good holiday themed outfit! Feel free to be creative and have fun with your outfits. You can go as casual as holiday themed pajamas or come dressed to the nines wearing your most posh and formal attire. For our mini sessions, we suggest going with one outfit per person since we are limited on time. We can probably squeeze in a quick outfit change if it is something easier like pajamas and you have less people in the session. This will eat up some time though, so please be conscious of that when deciding.

  1. Start with YOU. I usually suggest starting with your outfit first, and building everyone else's around yours. I am making the assumption that as the person booking the session, you are usually the one that helps everyone else with their outfits too. This will be easier to build the foundation for everyone else :)
  2. Choose a color palette. Think about choosing 2-3 coordinating colors, and building around that. This will give you room to try different patterns and textures too, while staying within a theme.
  3. Avoid 100% matching outfits. Matchy-matchy outfits are cute but will come through in photos as too matchy! You should try to coordinate but not match. Break up the colors, and mix up different fabrics and textures. (There are exceptions to this, like with holiday pajamas.)
  4. Pajamas. Matching pajamas are a cute option for holiday sessions, you can also match pajamas with sweaters and socks!
  5. Play around with textures and patterns. This will help break up colors if they are all in the same hue. Avoid stripes or small plaid as it can distort photos.
  6. Be comfortable. Everyone in your family should feel comfortable with their outfit so they can look and feel their best!
  7. Avoid distracting items. Graphic tees and neon colors can distract and take away from the main point of the family photos, you and your family.
  8. Accessorize. Little details like earrings, bracelets, hats, belts and other accessories will help you style and complete your outfit vs just wearing it.
  9. Remember the shoes. Shoes have the power to complete an outfit or completely destroy it! Avoid bright white shoes, all athletic sneakers, and kids’ shoes with cartoon characters and sparkles. If you just can’t find shoes you love, consider having the family go barefoot for the session (just bring shoes to walk around at the location!). Our indoor studios for holiday minis are clean shoe studios - please bring a pair of clean shoes to change into so we don't leave mud/dirt in the studio.
  10. Try on your outfits before the shoot. This will allow you time to switch things up if something isn't working or coordinating properly.
